Help Shape the Bosan Living Landscape
Eight years ago we came to Bosan with a simple dream: to live in partnership with the land. We planted trees, restored soil, created food forests and welcomed both people and wildlife. Over time we watched leopards, pangolins, Himalayan squirrels and countless birds share this hillside with us.
But the hills around Kathmandu are changing fast. Forests are fragmenting and traditional ways of living close to the land are under pressure. Planting trees alone is no longer enough.
We believe conservation works best when people remember they are part of nature — when healthy forests support healthy communities, when livelihoods depend on living ecosystems, and when children grow up knowing the birds in their gardens.
The Bosan Living Landscape is our response: an evolving place where ecological restoration, regenerative farming, local enterprise, education and hospitality support one another. At its heart we are restoring a mud outbuilding into a community hub — a space for shared meals from the garden, a small library, demonstration plantings, a seed bank and nursery, and workshops in natural farming, seed saving, traditional crafts and more.
A biodiverse corridor for wildlife to safely travel from the forest to the water source at the base of Bosan hill has been our vision from the beginning. Through partnerships with neighbouring landholders we are working to expand this goal to reconnect habitat so both people and wildlife can thrive together. Alongside this we support biodynamic market gardens and local enterprises rooted in natural materials and traditional skills.
This is not a finished project. It is a living relationship with a place — and it grows stronger when more people join in.

FAQs
How much does it cost and what’s included?
AUD $20 per day covers simple dorm-style accommodation and three home-cooked meals. Payment is made at the beginning of each week (or in full for your first week when booking). Longer stays are welcome and discounts may be available for extended periods or specialised skills.
What is the accommodation like?
You’ll stay in a traditional mud-and-stone farmhouse in Bosan village (next door to Stoneage Rituals and Retreat). Rooms are dorm-style — simple, comfortable and full of character, with beautiful natural surroundings and authentic village life. Bedding and towels are provided. Laundry can be done at the communal laundry/bathroom.
What meals are provided and can dietary needs be met?
All three meals are prepared for you. Typical breakfasts include egg and roti; lunch and dinner are usually daal bhaat made with produce from our farm or neighbouring farms whenever possible. Dietary requirements are happily respected.
What is the minimum stay and are longer stays possible?
Minimum stay is one week. Longer stays are very welcome. Optional days off (up to two per week) can be taken without affecting your place.
What kind of work will I be doing?
Work is seasonal and varied: propagating trees and perennial plants, preparing and planting gardens, weeding, making and applying biodynamic fertilisers, digging tree holes and planting the wildlife corridor, natural building (site prep, plastering, lime-wash), and documenting traditional skills, village life and wildlife. Guidance is provided in English.
How many hours will I work each day and how flexible is the schedule?
Expect a flexible 2–3 hour block of work, usually in the morning after breakfast (or in the afternoon if preferred). The schedule is designed around your own plans so you can follow your interests and explore the area freely. You can work both blocks if you’d like as well.
What skills or experience will I gain, and how does my contribution help?
No previous experience is needed. You’ll gain practical skills in regenerative farming, natural building, ecological restoration and documentation while making a real contribution to the Bosan Living Landscape vision. If you already have relevant skills, please let us know when booking so we can match you with suitable work.
What facilities are available and what should I bring?
Hot water, electricity, internet and laundry facilities are available. Bring all personal items you need for independent self-care. Moderate fitness is recommended as the site is on a terraced hillside. We welcome solo travellers, couples and small groups (up to 10 volunteers at a time).
Where exactly is the project located and what’s nearby?
We are in Bosan village, close to the Champadevi hiking trail, the ancient town of Kirtipur, and a short drive from Pharphing. Some work also takes place near our home at NEO Farm Retreat. Collaboration with our neighbours at KRMEF is available on request. We can help arrange transport to and from Kathmandu for arrival and departure.
How do I book and is travel insurance required?
